Improving dental health involves addressing homecare as well as diet. We recommend brushing at least twice daily and flossing at least once daily. To reduce cavities, we recommend minimizing snacking between meals and reducing sugary foods and drinks. It is also important to quit smoking if you are a smoker and to visit the dentist for routine checkups and cleanings at least every 6 months.
It is recommended to floss at least once a day to remove plaque and food particles between teeth. and below the gum line. This is ideally done in the evening after you’ve finished eating for the day so that the food particles and plaque do not sit on your teeth for an extended period overnight.
Teeth sensitivity to cold can be caused by enamel erosion, gum recession, or tooth decay. It can also be a sign of a cracked tooth, worn filling, or teeth grinding. Consult a dentist for diagnosis and treatment.
Tooth decay is caused by the interaction of bacteria in the mouth and sugars in food and drinks. When we consume foods that contain sugars (which includes carbohydrates, fruits, and sweets), the bacteria that exist in our mouth begin to break down the sugars and create acid. This acid begins to demineralize or dissolve our enamel. So, when food is left on our teeth for extended periods due to frequent snacking or infrequent brushing/flossing, the bacteria present in plaque cause more enamel destruction.
Bleeding gums can be a sign of gum disease. This is caused by a buildup of plaque and bacteria around the teeth and gumline for an extended period.
