What to Know After Getting Dental Fillings
- The anesthesia will wear off about 1-3 hours after the procedure. It is very important not to chew on the numb side in order to prevent injury to the tongue, lips, and cheek on the affected side.
- Your tooth (or teeth) may be sensitive to hold, cold or pressure after the procedure. This is normal, and the symptoms usually cease within a few days to weeks, and very rarely months. The most important thing to note is whether the symptoms are getting better, worse or staying the same. As long as the sensitivity minimizes, there is usually no cause for concern. If symptoms still persist after a few weeks, please give us a call!
- If your bite feels uneven once the anesthesia has worn off, please let us know ASAP. The uneven bite can cause further discomfort or pain if left unadjusted for an extended period.
- The gums in the area around where fillings were done may be sore for a few days.
- The anesthetic injection site may feel sore a bruised. Apply an ice pack to the affected area.
- If a filling was done on the biting edge of a front tooth, you will need to avoid biting into hard foods with your front teeth going forward. The force needed to bite through tougher things, like apples or a thick steak, will dislodge your filling.
