Do you suffer from chronic bad breath? Notice your gums appear red, tender, swollen, or sometimes bleed? You may be suffering from an extremely common oral condition known as periodontal disease. In fact, periodontal disease affects over 65,000,000 Americans today. Some common symptoms of gum disease include:
Many patients report not noticing any symptoms however until the disease had progressed. Visiting your dentist regularly for routine care can greatly reduce your risk of gingivitis and periodontal disease and other dental complications. Scaling and root planing is the most effective non-surgical way of treating gum disease. At Trinity Dental Loft, our hygiene team can effectively manage and treat your periodontal disease by removing plaque tartar and bacteria through a combination of deep cleaning (scaling), laser therapy, and medicament.
During periodontal therapy, the goal is to remove all of the plaque and tartar that has built up above and especially below the gingiva. This reduces the bacteria, infection, and inflammation present within the gums while also allowing the gums to heal and re-attach properly to a clean root surface. Deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing,is the most common treatment. Antibiotic/antimicrobial treatment and laser therapy may also be used to reduce the bacteria present in a periodontal pocket. During your appointment at Trinity Dental Loft, Dr. James and the hygiene team can help determine which periodontal treatment is best for your oral health.
Left untreated. During your initial exam at Trinity Dental Loft, the team will take x-rays and check the pocket depths around all of your teeth. If you have deep pocketing, bone loss and/or subgingival tartar buildup, a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) will likely be recommended.
Dr. James will numb the gums around your teeth so that you are comfortable throughout the procedure. Dental instruments and sonic scalers are then used to remove both the large and small tartar deposits from the crown and root of the tooth.
After the procedure, you will need to come in for regular periodontal maintenance at 3- or 4-month intervals. This helps to keep the tooth surfaces clean in order to promote gingival reattachment. This also gives the team at Trinity Dental Loft a chance to monitor your progress and make sure that we are giving you all the tools to maintain your oral health.
Left untreated, periodontal gum disease causes destruction of the bone that holds your teeth in place. If too much of your bone is destroyed, your teeth will become loose and eventually fall out.
Periodontal disease and its associated bacteria and inflammation can cause or worsen heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory disease. Therefore, it is very important to maintain periodontal health not just keep your mouth healthy, but to maintain overall systemic health.
